This splendid Kilim from Afghanistan is a vibrant expression of ancient textile tradition. Expertly crafted using hand-carded wool for the pile and cotton for the warp, it offers a distinctive texture and remarkable durability. Its density, ranging between 160,000 and 200,000 knots/sqm, and a thickness of 0.3 cm, attest to its quality and meticulous workmanship.
The design features an intense black field that serves as a backdrop to a series of precisely arranged octagonal medallions. These medallions are outlined with a subtle white/orange border and filled with a range of pastel and vibrant colors, spanning from terracotta red to ochre yellow, sky blue to antique pink, with delicate touches of lilac and gray. Each medallion encloses stylized floral or geometric motifs, contributing to the rug's visual richness. The outer border features a succession of arrow shapes and tribal symbols that add further depth to the design.
The use of natural dyes and weaving techniques can sometimes present slight color variations known as abrash, which lend the Kilim an authentic character and a vibrant soul. This Kilim is perfect for adding an ethnic and sophisticated touch to any setting, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
