This magnificent Mashad rug, originating from Persia, embodies the richness and elegance of the ancient Persian knotting tradition. Its composition of hand-carded wool on a cotton warp ensures exceptional softness and remarkable wear resistance, with a density of 160,000-200,000 knots/sqm and a thickness of approximately 1.1 cm.
The main field, a vibrant cardinal red, is dominated by an elaborate multi-lobed central medallion, finished in dark blue, cream, and touches of light blue and ocher. Around the medallion, the all-over design unfolds with a myriad of stylized floral motifs: palmettes, rosettes, vine leaves, and buds, all interconnected by subtle curvilinear scrolls that create an atmosphere of refined harmony.
The complex borders are a masterpiece in themselves. The main border, on a navy blue ground, is adorned with large palmettes and stylized flowers interspersed with elegant boteh motifs and cartouches. This is flanked by several secondary borders, with smaller geometric and floral designs, framing the rug with mastery and precision. The skillful use of color and the meticulous execution of details make this Mashad a piece of great artistic and historical value, perfect for enriching any environment with its timeless beauty. No obvious abrash is observed in this particular piece.
