This magnificent Tabriz rug, originating from Persia, is a splendid example of traditional knotting art. Crafted from hand-carded wool (cotton warp), it boasts a high knot density (160,000-200,000 knots/sqm), which ensures remarkable design fineness and lasting durability. Its thickness of 1 centimeter indicates a compact and robust weave.
The rug is dominated by an elaborate central medallion, set against a vibrant crimson red field. The medallion itself is woven in shades of dark blue, with details in cream, light blue, and ochre, creating a strong visual contrast. The red field is densely decorated with an all-over design of floral motifs, including stylized palmettes, spiraling leaves, and delicate tendrils, which radiate harmoniously from the center towards the edges. The spandrels (corners) of the field partially echo the design and colors of the medallion, balancing the composition.
The rug's border is complex and multi-layered, featuring a main dark blue band richly adorned with smaller floral motifs, often in shades of yellow, red, and cream, flanked by thinner secondary borders that elegantly define the entire piece. The presence of subtle color variations, known as abrash, attests to the use of natural dyes and adds an authentic and unique character to this specimen.
