This magnificent Shiraz rug is an authentic testament to the art of nomadic Persian weaving. Originating from the Shiraz region in southern Persia, it reflects the traditions and motifs passed down through generations by the Qashqai and Luri peoples.
The design is dominated by a central field of deep, vibrant red, obtained from natural dyes that often display the characteristic abrash effect, a hallmark of authenticity and handcrafted work. Along the vertical axis, large diamond-shaped medallions in black stand out, elegantly framed by a succession of "sawtooth" or rack motifs that create a dynamic visual effect.
Within these main medallions and the surrounding red field, small square geometric medallions are found, divided into four contrasting color sections – red, black, dark green, cream – symbolizing natural and cosmic elements. Stylized motifs of birds (likely doves or roosters, symbols of fertility and good fortune), trees of life, and other tribal symbols are gracefully scattered, adding narrative to the design.
The border, rich in geometric zigzag, "S" and star patterns, beautifully frames the rug, balancing the intensity of the central field. Woven with hand-carded wool on a cotton warp and boasting a density of approximately 160,000-200,000 knots/sqm, this Shiraz is not just a piece of furniture, but a piece of Persian history and culture, ideal for those seeking a rug with character and a profound story.
