The Bidjar runner depicted is an extraordinary example of Persian knotting art, originating from the city of the same name in Persia. Known as the "iron rugs" due to their exceptional robustness and particularly dense knotting, Bidjar rugs are masterpieces that last over time, testifying to centuries-old craftsmanship.
This specific example features a fascinating composition: a series of hexagonal or octagonal medallions dominate the field, each characterized by a light background, such as cream or ivory, which creates a luminous contrast with the rich floral and geometric motifs. The interior of these medallions is a veritable stylized garden, with delicate leaves, flowers, and geometric elements intertwined in a complex and harmonious design. The dark background surrounding the medallions, a deep night blue or burnt sienna, is also densely populated with similar motifs, extending almost like an all-over design, ensuring an impression of opulence and depth. Vibrant colors, such as ruby red, forest green, and blue accents, further enrich the palette.
The main border is adorned with a succession of stylized motifs that echo the elements of the central field, perfectly framing the rug and adding another layer of aesthetic complexity. The thinner secondary borders complete the design with their delicacy.
Hand-knotted with high-quality hand-carded wool on a cotton warp, this rug has a density of approximately 400,000-450,000 knots/sqm and a thickness of 1.4 cm, contributing to its remarkable durability and underfoot comfort. The use of natural fibers and vegetable dyes (Bidjars often show a slight abrash) gives the rug a natural patina and a unique character that improves with age. A Bidjar is not just a furnishing object, but a work of art that brings warmth, history, and a touch of timeless elegance to any room, particularly in hallways or entrances where its elongated shape fits perfectly.
