This fascinating rug is a superb example of Persian tribal textile art, likely crafted by the skilled hands of Qashqai women or a similar tribe from southwestern Iran. Entirely handmade with naturally spun and dyed wool, this rug captures the essence of nomadic life and a love for vibrant colors and symbolic designs.
The design is dominated by a large, stepped central medallion in shades of red and dark blue, which stands out prominently against the deep black main field. Around the medallion, the black field is dotted with a myriad of stylized geometric motifs: small flowers, animals, and hooked elements intertwined in a dynamic and captivating all-over design. In the four corners, the spandrels are filled with a warm red, also decorated with geometric patterns that echo those of the medallion and field.
Multiple borders beautifully frame the rug, with decorative strips alternating zig-zag and stylized floral motifs in shades of white, blue, yellow, and red, adding further depth and character. The high-quality wool gives the rug exceptional robustness and a soft surface to the touch. Any slight color variation, or 'abrash', attests to the use of natural dyes and the uniqueness of each hand-knotted piece.
This rug is not just a decorative item, but a piece of history and culture, capable of bringing warmth and an authentic atmosphere to any setting, from modern homes to more classic furnishings.
