This splendid Kilim from Afghanistan is an authentic expression of traditional textile art. Made with hand-carded wool (warp: cotton), it features a durable structure and a soft surface. The thin pile, characteristic of Kilims (thickness 0.3 cm), enhances its lightness and practicality.
The design is an explosion of geometric motifs. The central field is dominated by a series of large hexagonal medallions, arranged in horizontal and vertical rows. Each hexagon contains intricate internal patterns, ranging from diamonds to crosses, creating a dynamic and harmonious visual effect. The color palette of the field is rich yet balanced, with pastel tones of light blue, mint green, cream, ochre yellow, and mauve, blending elegantly.
The outer border, very wide, is a warm burnt sienna or brick red color, decorated with a myriad of small diamonds and zig-zag motifs. These precisely repeated geometries create a fascinating contrast with the field's medallions, clearly defining spaces and adding depth to the artifact. The presence of abrash, the slight variations in hue due to artisanal dyeing, gives the Kilim a unique and authentic character, testifying to its handmade craftsmanship.
This Kilim is a versatile work of art, perfect for adding a touch of warmth and tradition to any setting, from classic to modern. Its durability and material quality ensure its longevity.
